Councilman John Gerl was elected to the Joliet City Council in April 2011. In addition, John is chair of the Public Safety Committee and serves on the Finance Committee. John graduated from Joliet West High School in 1981 and Lewis University in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. John is a certified public accountant (CPA). He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Illinois CPA Society and the Government Finance Officer’s Association. John was a member of the Will County Board from November, 1996 through March 2009, where he served as Chairman of the Finance Committee. Currently, John is the Director of Finance & Administration for the Forest Preserve District of Will County. At the Forest Preserve he is responsible for the accounting, finance, information technology (IT) human resources and the Forest Preserve’s volunteer program. John sits on the Board of Directors for Joliet Catholic Academy, and is an active member of St. Raymond’s Church in Joliet.

Family History
John is a lifelong resident of Joliet, and has been married to his wife Ronae for over 24 years. John and Ronae have two children, Johnny and Haley. Johnny is a junior at the University of Iowa and Haley is a freshman at the University of Missouri.

Goals for the City of Joliet
It is very important to John that Joliet be the best place in America to call home. As a city councilman, the quality of life for our residents is the most important priority for John. Joliet has a wonderful public school system, along with many quality parochial and private school options to choose from. The Rialto Theater provides numerous entertainment opportunities not only for our residents, but for the entire county. John wants to continue to build upon all of the positive attributes the City of Joliet has to offer. In addition, he would like to help create a positive business environment within the City of Joliet that will encourage growth in the private sector, which leads to job creation.
