Laboratory Summer Intern

GENERAL PURPOSE

The purpose of this internship is geared toward students seeking to advance their professional knowledge and skills in order to reinforce their academic training.  Working under the direct supervision of the Wastewater Laboratory Chemist, and under the general supervision of the Wastewater Superintendent, the primary function of an employee in this position is to perform a variety of chemical, biological and bacteriological tests and analyses of wastewater, industrial waste and related samples. They will also be responsible for maintaining records of testing, analysis, chain of custody and other related information, as well as reporting results to the appropriate wastewater treatment staff to enable compliance with Federal, State, County, City and other applicable public health environmental and safety standards. The individual in this position may also perform other job related duties as assigned.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: 

High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Must be currently enrolled in an institution of higher learning, and in the process of obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences or a related field.

Must demonstrate strong organizational, computer and communication skills, both written and verbal

Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, stamina and balance to work in an office and wastewater treatment plant environment

Public Safety Dispatcher I

SALARY: $39,541- $71,196

TASKS OR DUTIES:    (Illustrative)

Responds to requests for police, fire, and EMS services;

Becomes certified in LEADS/NCIC;

Becomes certified in CPR and EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch), and provides medical instruction to those on the scene of an emergency as necessary;  

Dispatches police units for an assigned geographical area in the City;

Dispatches fire units for the City;

Monitors the alarm monitoring system in the Communications Center;

Prepares and/or completes various reports and logs as necessary;

Operates various computer systems and networks as necessary to perform dispatching tasks;

Historic Preservation Intern

JOB POSTING #: 08-19
TITLE: Historic Preservation Intern (Position Code #7042 )(APPROX. 12 WEEKS)
SALARY: $10.00 per hour/ NO BENEFITS

GENERAL PURPOSE:

This temporary full-time position performs historic preservation and planning duties for the City involving a wide range of assignments. The position is open only to full-time students enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree level program and is expected to run from mid-May through mid-August 2019, for a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 40 hours per week. Flexibility in hours and employment dates is available to address individual needs. Compensation is $10 per hour.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop historical narratives for Joliet neighborhoods. Include current conditions and describe any cultural influences on the built environment.

  • Assist with the inventory of architectural styles and building types in Joliet neighborhoods.

  • Develop historical narratives for existing religious buildings.

  • Assist with the development of special thematic walking or bus tours

  • Assist other planning staff members and perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D equivalent

  • Enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program in historic preservation, history, museum studies, geography, planning, public administration, or a related field. Enrollment in a Master’s degree program in historic preservation, history, museum studies, geography, planning, public administration, or a related field preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Experience:

  • Excellent research, writing and public communication skills.

  • Good judgment, thoroughness and dependability.

  • Ability to plan, coordinate and manage projects.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.

GENERAL PURPOSE

The purpose of this Job is geared toward students seeking to advance their professional knowledge and skills in order to reinforce their academic training. As such, education or experience in forestry management, environmental science, natural resources management, or related field is highly desirable. The ability to accurately identify tree species is required. Must be willing to engage in outdoor labor activities in addition to performing administrative support work in the office. Must be organized and dependable and demonstrate a solid work ethic. Must also be able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing, and be able to effectively establish and maintain cooperative relationships with coworkers and the public. Candidates must have basic computer skills, including knowledge of MS Office and related software, and possess a valid driver’s license

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Working with street trees (inspecting trees, pruning and mulching, watering trees and flower baskets);
Assist in implementing and updating an inventory of street trees in the City of Joliet;
Create and/or update the tree inventory data. Collect information on street trees including caliper, species and location;
Record location of trees in the field using GIS software;
Field survey on foot covering potentially +/- 5 miles a day.
Working with roadway division doing various roadway work.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Open to full-time community college, four-year university and graduate students studying forestry, urban forestry and horticulture;
Advanced plant knowledge and tree identification required;
