Post Date:04/18/2017 10:51 AM
In support of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the Joliet Police Department has partnered with the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP) and AAA to participate in the Distracted Driving Awareness Week. Through an effort to bring attention to the dangers and consequences associated with driving distracted, Governor Rauner issued the Proclamation and both Houses passed Resolutions identifying April 24 through April 28 as Illinois Distracted Driving Awareness Week.
This campaign will include the education and enforcement of applicable state distracted driving laws. The education portion of this initiative is running the week of April 17, 2017, and is available on the website There are several downloadable flyers with a wealth of information about distracted driving and the dangers of it.
The Joliet Police Department will conduct the second portion (enforcement action) from April 24-28, 2017. According to Chief Brian Benton, “It’s important that we partner with the community to highlight the dangers of driving while distracted. Research shows that more and more accidents are caused by drivers on the phone, texting, or not paying attention to what they are doing while driving.” Chief Benton further stated, “We need to educate and, when necessary, enforce the existing traffic laws so that we can improve the safety of our Joliet roadways.”
These partnerships have been formed to help further a traffic safety culture in Illinois and to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries resulting from distracted driving. Please help the ILACP, AAA, and the Joliet Police Department to keep Illinois’ roadways safe and Illinois strong.
